Enrique Pérez Flores, the visionary founder of La Zagaleta, Europe’s most exclusive urbanization, left an indelible mark on the luxury real estate landscape. Born on August 3, 1923, in Moguer (Huelva), he dedicated his life to creating a haven of opulence and natural beauty. Sadly, on Sunday, October 11, 2020, he passed away in Estepona (Malaga) due to natural causes, leaving behind a remarkable legacy.

 

As the honorary president of La Zagaleta, Enrique Pérez Flores transformed the old estate of Adnan Khashoggi, known as La Baraka, in Benahavís, into a prestigious enclave. In 1990, along with a group of friends, he acquired La Baraka after the property embargo resulting from Khashoggi’s alleged involvement in arms trafficking. This acquisition marked the beginning of a grand vision that would redefine luxury living on the Costa del Sol.

Enrique Pérez Flores, affectionately known as Don Enrique within the La Zagaleta community, embarked on an impressive journey of education and professional success. After completing high school in Seville, he entered the University and later joined the Official Customs Academy. In 1947, he graduated as a member of the special optional body of customs technicians, which eventually merged into the Body of Finance Inspectors.

Throughout his career, Enrique Pérez Flores held various positions of influence and responsibility. He served as the Director of Commerce in the Economic Delegation of the High Commission in the former Spanish Protectorate in Morocco until the country gained independence in 1956. Even after independence, he remained in Morocco until 1960, overseeing the withdrawal of the peseta in the international zone of Tangier.

In 1960, Enrique Pérez Flores ventured to Zurich, Switzerland, where he founded several companies focused on international finance. He played a pivotal role in negotiating reciprocal agreements between Spain and Switzerland for the establishment of banks. His efforts led to the granting of the first license for a Spanish entity in Switzerland, resulting in the creation of Banco Exterior, of which he served as president until 1990.

Retiring as a banker, Enrique Pérez Flores embarked on a new chapter in his life that would forever shape the landscape of luxury living in southern Spain. In 1991, he assembled a group of friends and acquired the Khashoggi hunting estate, laying the foundation for what would become La Zagaleta. With an initial plan to build 3,000 homes, he made the audacious decision to create an exclusive community of only 420 houses, each situated on spacious 25,000 square meter plots.

Enrique Pérez Flores’s legacy lives on through his son, Ignacio Pérez Díaz, who has assumed the role of executive president of the company that controls La Zagaleta. Also, the current CEO of La Zagaleta is Jacobo Cestino, who is together with Ignacio Perez Diaz continuing to expand its horizons, including the development of a second Zagaleta on the Valderrama land in Castellar de la Frontera (Cádiz).
